Disability-friendly bikes in Brisbane offer a pathway to freedom, independence, and joy for people of all abilities. These specifically designed adaptive bicycles and trikes remove the barriers to riding that traditional 2-wheeled bikes create, opening up cycling to everyone.
Quick Answer: Where to Find Disability-Friendly Bikes in Brisbane:
For many, standard bikes don't work due to balance issues, limited mobility, or other physical challenges. Adaptive bikes change everything. Take Marta, 52, who had limited mobility. After getting her an adaptive trike, her husband Paul says "she gained freedom, became active, physical, and happy."
The electric assistance on these bikes is a game-changer! It enables riders with compromised strength to be able to ride again. Pedal assistance enables individuals of diverse abilities to enjoy bike riding with ease while fostering a sense of community and empowerment.
Brisbane has a growing network of specialists and support services dedicated to making cycling accessible. Whether you need a low step-through e-bike, a stable trike, or a solution custom to your specific requirements, the right bike is out there.
Finding the right disability-friendly bikes in Brisbane means finding a perfect fit for your body and lifestyle. The beauty of modern adaptive bikes lies in their thoughtful design, with each type engineered to address specific challenges while maximizing comfort, stability, and the joy of cycling.
Upright Trikes are often known as traditional trikes. Upright trikes have that familiar bike-like setup—pedals underneath a saddle seat, and a riding style that feels classic. Hopping on takes a bit of balance and leg strength, especially for taller riders who need to raise the saddle for comfort and pedalling efficiency. Because you sit higher up, the ride can feel tippy on slopes, but with a bit of leaning and counter-steering—like a skier—you’ll get the hang of it.
Practice is essential for riders transitioning from two-wheels to three-wheeled upright trikes. These trikes are great for those who like a traditional look, are new to cycling, or are familiar with quad bikes or motorbikes with a sidecar and are open to learning a new style of riding.
Semi-Recumbent Trikes offer a completely different feel—more like settling into a comfy chair than straddling a bike. With a supportive seat at dining chair height and pedals out in front, they give you a laid-back ride that’s easy on the joints and simple to control. They’re wonderfully stable, especially on uneven surfaces and gentle cross slopes, and take the stress off your wrists and upper body.
Ideal for older, taller and heavier riders, people with mobility challenges, using AFOs or prosthetics, or anyone who just wants to bring the joy of riding back into reach. And with different motor and pedal setups to choose from, there’s a semi-recumbent to suit just about every body.
Tandem & Side-by-Side Bikes are perfect for sharing the experience. Side-by-side tandems like the Huka Orthros allow you to chat easily as you ride and the switchable hub even lets you pedal in sync. Electric assistance ensures both riders can contribute comfortably and enjoy riding together in the community.
Passenger trikes enable riders who can't pedal to share the experience of riding where a pilot does the pedalling, steering and braking controls. Perfect for multi-generational riding and getting people outside when they are no longer able to pedal.
Trikes for Special Needs offer configurations to actively support riders with more complex needs. The adaptations and custom modifications often provided with special needs trikes include options for limited leg rotation and foot placement support (adaptive pedals, adjustable crank lengths), posutral weakness (backrest and lateral supports, pelvic support belts and harnesses), and leg or ankle weakness (foot levellers, knee abductors or self-levelling pedals) and steering/braking controls operated by the attendant (rear-steering arm, side-steering arm, steering dampeners).
For all riders using trikes with special needs supports, electric motors can make the trike feel lighter, easier to move for rider and attendant and encourage skills development, improved endurance and fun. You can even get remote-control power drop-outs for attendants to use while the rider is learning to ride independently.
Finding the right disability-friendly bike in Brisbane is a personal journey that requires professional guidance and hands-on experience. A trial is absolutely essential, as every person's needs are unique and this is often a requirement to secure funding support.
If seeking funding from the government, the most important step is to find the bike or trike that best suits your needs. Background research by families, therapist and the EveryBody eBikes team will likely fine-tune the search to identify two or three potential options.
The process begins with a comprehensive assessment by an allied health professional, like an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist together with the team at EveryBody eBikes. The therapist evaluates the rider's physical and cognitive abilities, personal goals, and individual requirements to identify to preferred solution. The therapist makes the prescription and if funding is secured, Everybody eBikes makes it happen!

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be a game-changer for acquiring your disability-friendly adaptive bikes or trikes, with and without power, in Brisbane.
Adaptive bikes and trikes are Assistive Technology (AT) and can be funded if considered reasonable and necessary. Adaptive trikes are usually categorised as a capital expense and can be funded as an s.10 support if assessed by NDIS as being reasonable and necessary.
Adaptive trikes can help you perform daily tasks, maintain abilities, and improve your independence. They are particularly effective in enabling the rider access their community, maintain social connections and keep active. There are many research papers that highlight the importance of active mobility for people living with a disability and for older riders. "Use it or lose it", as the saying goes.
As a registered NDIS provider, we have completed an extensive application and renewal process to ensure we maintain the highest level of scrutiny in our people, processes and deliverables. The NDIA requires ongoing registration every 3 years and the systems we deploy daily for safety, professionalism and product quality underpins our business.
At EveryBody eBikes, we understand the process and are here to help you connect with those who can assess the possibilities for you and prescribe the best solution to keep you active longer.
The NDIS funding process can be broken down into manageable steps:
We've developed clear NDIS documentation to support you, making your journey to owning a disability-friendly bike in Brisbane as smooth as possible. We're here to help you access the mobility and independence you deserve, whether you're exploring our Special Needs bikes or need guidance through the NDIS or Aged Care process or if deciding to take matters into your own hands (and get riding sooner!).
The beauty of disability-friendly bikes in Brisbane lies in their adaptability. These machines can be carefully customised to meet a vast array of individual needs, ensuring every rider experiences comfort, control, and confidence.
Here are some common adaptive features and customisations:
Seating & Support Systems: Comfort and stability start here. Options include a range of saddle designs, a backrest saddle for a small amount of support or full backrest and postural supports for crucial trunk support. Some of our range can accommodate special pelvic support belts, 4-point or H harnesses or a simple waist strap to provide a secure, ergonomic riding position.
Pedal & Crank Modifications: We can adapt for specific leg and foot needs with Special Needs Pedals (with a range of strap types, heel-cups or cages), Self-Levelling Pedals for easier foot placement, Knee Abductors to help pedal rotations, or an Adjustable Crank Length for riders with limited knee or hip flexion or progressing through rehabilitation following knee or hip surgery.
Handlebar & Steering Adjustments: We adjust handlebar design, height, angle, and reach for an ergonomic grip and comfortable posture. Some bikes feature unique steering mechanisms that require less force or offer different control inputs. We offer rear and side-steering solutions where an attendant controls the steering for riders who are unable to do this independently and we offer steering dampeners to reduce the rider's steering abilities where they may be just too enthusiastic! And if a rider is unable to steer at all, we provide the side-by-side tandem Huka Orthros (where only the pilot steers and the co-rider simply holds onto their own handlebar and pedals), or the Trojan Family, where the co-rider sits on a bench seat at the rear and does not participate in the pedalling, but enjoys being outdoors all the same.
Electric Pedal Assistance: An electric motor is a game-changer, providing pedal assist to amplify your effort and make riding less strenuous. This is ideal for managing endurance or fatigue. By law, all motors must only assist the rider up to 25 km/hr. Many of our customers prefer to reduce the maximum speed to better suit their riding abilities and confidence. We do not offer bikes or trikes which assist over 25 km/hr. The electric pedal assistance is designed to help riders when they are pedalling and not replace the pedalling action completely. Each model will move without pedalling to a speed of up to 6 km/hr and this is a legal feature. Additional power without pedalling is optional and only offered where the risk of not having this feature due to disability needs is greater than the risk of having a modification which is non-compliant. All our range can have the power delivery adjusted to suit the rider's abilities, their riding environment and their confidence levels. Low-speed motors can also be programmed for gentle, controlled assistance.
Safety Features: Beyond standard safety, we can add features like remote disable switches for caregivers. Remote-control electric cut-out devices can be installed to enable an attendant to drop the power on a bike from up to 25m from the rider, often used with younger riders or for riders who may have behaviour issues. We often recommend rear vision mirrors to trikes to reduce the need to turn when riding in shared spaces and can offer a range of adaptations for individual safety requirements. Our range also provides our customers with options when riding a two-wheeled bike or an upright trike is not safe. The inherent stability of our sit-down trikes adds a layer of safety by reducing the risk of tipping the trike on cross camber or uneven surfaces. We also want to mitigate the risk of falls for all our customers, though riding a bike does come with inherent risk, so we offer solutions to reduce this risk as much as possible. "If in doubt, stop and reassess the risk of the situation and ride to your abilities" is a commonly-used statement by the team at EveryBody eBikes.
Every modification is considered with your unique capabilities and goals in mind. Our team ensures that any Adaptive Accessories are seamlessly integrated for a reliable and enjoyable ride.
When someone gets their first disability-friendly bike in Brisbane, it's about more than just sustainable transport—it's about refinding possibilities. Take Marta, 52, who had reduced mobility for years. After getting her adaptive bike, her husband Paul watched in amazement as "she gained freedom, became active, physical, and happy."
The benefits are wide-ranging! Sometimes it’s not about pushing harder but finding a way to move that feels right for you. Adaptive bikes and trikes offer gentle support that helps you build strength, ease back into movement and enjoy the ride without overdoing it. With electric assist, you can go at your own pace. No pressure, no rush, just the freedom to move when and how it feels good.
It’s the little everyday things that start to feel possible again. Heading to the shops. Visiting a friend. Taking a quiet ride around the block. Adaptive bikes and trikes are designed with comfort and stability in mind, so you can ride with confidence and ease. And when you’re out there, feeling the sun on your skin and the breeze in your hair, something shifts. You begin to feel more like yourself again. At EveryBody eBikes, we want the experience to be enjoyable not a challenge!
The best part is the return of choice. The choice to move, to explore, to do things in a way that suits you. That gentle sense of independence can make all the difference. You’re not trying to keep up with anyone else. You’re just finding what feels good, one ride at a time.
Electric trikes are popular disability-friendly bikes in Brisbane because they uniquely combine functionality and exercise. Unlike a mobility scooter, an e-trike allows you to be as active as you want. In Australia, they are treated like bicycles, giving you full access to bike paths, cycleways, rail-trails, roads (where signed for bicycle use) and that opens up a whole new world of potential. Imagine riding your bike or trike not just around your neighbourhood, but being able to take your bike or trike on scenic routes.
The user experience is also more positive, promoting an image of recreation and community connection. EveryBody eBikes can also provide you options to transport your bike or trike (or both) using a tow-bar mounted carrier designed for this purpose.
Feature | Electric Trike | Mobility Scooter | |
---|---|---|---|
Physical Benefits | Low-impact exercise with pedal assist | Primarily passive transport | |
Mental Well-being | Improves sense of self, independence and engagement | Does not necessarily offer the same feeling of freedom, independence and fun | |
Legal Path Access | Full access to bike paths, roads, shared paths and anywhere signed for bicycle use | Unable to use on roads | |
Speed | Safe cycling speeds, faster than walking, assistance up to 25 km/hr or lower speeds at whatever feels safe for you | Limited to 10 km/hr | |
Social Engagement | Active, recreational, promotes community connection | Practical but less socially engaging |
We know choosing an adaptive bike can feel overwhelming. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from people starting their journey to find the perfect disability-friendly bikes in Brisbane.
The first and most crucial step is to test-ride the bike or trike that you are interested in. Many of our customers need to at least sit on a bike or trike to be able to feel what is right for them. All the research in the world does not truly describe how you will feel when riding the bike or trike. This is particularly important if changing from 2-wheels to 3-wheels as riding an upright trike can be tricky for some.
If seeking funding via NDIS or Aged Care, the test ride needs to be completed in conjunction with an allied health professional, like an Occupational Therapist (OT) or Physiotherapist (PT).
Most therapists want to be there and observe you transfer on and off the trike and then to use the controls and operate the trike to their satisfaction. They are the ones who have to professional prescribe the unit and they need to be confident that the model you prefer is safe, reasonable and necessary. An OT has the specialised expertise to evaluate your physical abilities, limitations, and cycling goals. They can recommend the most suitable type of adaptive bike and any necessary customisations. This professional report is also vital for a successful NDIS or Aged Care funding application.
If buying a trike personally, you do not need to engage an allied health therapist. Just come into the shop or give EveryBody eBIkes a call and we can help you with your choice and get you riding sooner.
While some standard bikes can be modified, it's often more effective and safer to start with a purpose-built frame. Disability-friendly bikes are engineered from the ground up for stability, safe transfers, easy setup and fitting, and support. This provides a superior foundation for further customisation, resulting in a bike that is truly designed for your needs, not just adapted.
The NDIS funding timeline can vary significantly based on individual circumstances and current NDIS processing times. The process involves several stages, including the OT assessment, sourcing quotes, and submitting the application. We advise starting the process early and ensuring all paperwork is complete and accurate to avoid delays.
While some applications are approved in months, others may take several years. Only participants who already have funding in their plans are likely to receive a decision within weeks. The delays can be far longer than expected and we do suggest considering the reasons for wanting to ride and the value of riding sooner, if you are able to self-fund a bike. Sometimes, conditions change and that loss of time could be a negative to your goals for improved physical and mental well-being.
As a registered NDIS provider, we support you through this process to give your application the best chance of success.
Disability-friendly bikes in Brisbane are doing more than helping people get from place to place. They’re giving people the chance to enjoy life in new ways, to be connected and engaged in their locla community.
