Electric trikes or e-trikes offer the stability and convenience of three wheels and extra cargo space, making them an appealing choice for many riders. But are they really easier to ride than an e-bike? And which style is right for you? Here are five key things to consider before buying.
It’s easy to assume that three wheels automatically mean perfect stability. While e-trikes do stand upright on their own so the rider no longer has to put their feet on the ground when stationary (you can even stay seated while waiting at traffic lights!) and trikes are easier to manage at low speeds, handling upright or traditional trikes in a range of uneven surfaces can cause instability.
Adopting a riding style for e-trikes means taking sharp corners slowly and carefully, considering how best to approach uneven surfaces and refraining from turning at higher speeds. Incorrect handling of an upright trike can create tipping risks.
E-bikes, on the other hand, require balance when stationary but often feel more stable once you’re rolling. The takeaway: Electric trikes make stopping and low-speed manoeuvring easier, but practice is still needed to handle turns and bumps safely.
At EveryBody eBikes, we don’t assume that you know all this beforehand. If you come in-store, we can show you how to properly ride your trike, give tips on handling corners, braking, and uneven surfaces, and help you choose the trike style that’s best suited to your needs! And if not able to come into the shop, we can still talk you through the risks and help you make the correct decision upfront, to avoid costly mistakes.
Our Trojan Family Electric Trike has great storage space and load capacity!
One of the biggest advantages of e-trikes is comfort and load capacity. Many of our models such as the Trojan Family include a large rear bench seat which can be extended to include a larger cargo area. Our other trikes all include a rear basket option, perfect for groceries, carrying your pet, or all the things you need for the working day.
While e-bikes can carry loads too, balancing heavy cargo on two wheels takes more skill unless the bike is designed for carrying cargo. If general stability, comfort, and carrying capacity are your main priorities, an e-trike is a practical choice.
Not all trikes are built the same.
Have a posture similar to a traditional bike. You have to be able to step up onto the saddle, like a normal bike so if that is not an issue, they’re easy to mount. Once on the saddle, the higher ride position offers good visibility for you and for those who need to see you in traffic. The trade-off is a slightly higher centre of gravity, which can feel top-heavy in corners.
Example of an Upright Trike: Our Trojan Electric Trike
Feature a lower, reclined seat with back support and forward-positioned pedals. Designed with a full seat set at the height of a dining chair, they offer better comfort and easy transfers. By default, the lower centre of gravity provides improved stability, especially over uneven surfaces, better handling on tighter corners and ability to ride with pedalk assistance to the full 25 km/hr. When riding a semi-recumbent or sit-down trike, many customers like to add flags or additional flashing lights for visibility.
Here, we have Richard on our Trident FT Semi-Recumbent Trike!
Electric trikes are not simple “assemble at home” purchases. We don’t expect our customers to be bike mechanics. We wholeheartedly believe that every rider needs to start their riding journey with the correct setup, including seat position, handlebar reach, and crank length to improve overall fit. Being able to handle the trike well is always a safer way to start riding.
Ultimately, the best e-trike depends on your build, your previous riding habits, needs and budget. If you have good balance and find holding the bike up on your own while stationary is still easy, a traditional e-bike might still be better.
If you want more stability, comfort, easy loading, or a relaxed riding posture, a semi-recumbent or upright trike could be ideal.
Always test the trike on terrain similar to your regular routes, consider how you’ll mount and dismount, and think about storage and transportation.
We offer FREE test rides to help find the perfect fit for YOU. If you're not sure where to start, we’ll figure out your riding style and needs. We believe there is a bike for EveryBody.
E-trikes aren’t automatically safer or better than e-bikes, they’re simply different! Try both styles at your trusted bike shop, take your time to practice, and pick the design that suits your body, your routes, and your lifestyle.
Also we believe it is essential to consider quality and ability to obtain spare parts down the track. Our models have excellent design and quality components which makes servicing easier in the longer-term, to offer peace of mind both now and for the life-time of your ownership.
With the right choice, an e-trike can make riding more comfortable, practical, and fun. Electric trikes can change your life, bring active mobility back into your everyday existence and offer the freedom and independence experienced in the past on 2-wheels for those who now prefer 3-wheels, for whatever reason!
